Rohtang Valley – Manali’s snow point in summer

Rohtang Pass falls on the Manali – Leh highway and is a famous tourist spot in Manali .In summers when the snow cover becomes thin in Manali mountain peaks you can still experience the white snow covered mountain peaks at Rohtang Pass.

It is to note that this place is closed for tourists on tuesday’s due to maintenance work by the government.It is not advisable to visit Rohtang on , Wednesday as well , because the number of tourist doubles due to the holiday , so , road jams and delays may spoil your journey.

1 Solang valley

This tourist attraction falls on the way to Rohtang pass at a distance of 14 km northwest of Manali .It offers magnificent view of glaciers and snow capped mountains and peaks. It has fine ski slopes. While you can enjoy sking and mountaineering in winter , there is a special winter skiing festival , organized here in this season which attracts a number of tourists and enthusiast here.In summer , a number of adventure activities is organized at this place which includes para-gliding , zorbing down hill , trekking , camping ,Solang Ropeway aka gondola and other activities.

2 Kothi Village

Kothi is a small village on the way to Rohtang is special in the sense is that there is no considerable human population beyond this village and Rohtang.It falls at a distance of 16 km from Manali.There are only few number of hotels here but you can also try accommodation at the popular public works department (PWD) guest house .This place offers picturesque picnic spots surrounded by snow capped peaks and beas river flows below.This place has been a shooting location of a number of hindi films.

3 Rahala falls

Rahala , a magnificent water fall , is located on the old road from Kothi village to Marhi (on foot) at a distance of 27 kms from Manali.This natural fall is formed by the melting of glaciers.Amidst the silver birch trees and forest of deodar it is a piece of mind to witness this tourist spot

4 Marhi

It falls between Manali to Rohtang route at a distance of 38Kms.It offers second option to view snow when Rohtang is closed.There are small hotels here where you can get down a have some meal.

5 Gulaba Snow Point

Gulaba is another small village , named after raja Gulab Singh.The upper slopes at gulaba are peaceful (less crowd) where you can enjoy the snow.Solang valley is 4 km off the way to Gulaba.It is 4-5 kms from Kothi,and has snow almost all round the year.When the Rotang pass is closed (November to May) in winter season , this is an alternative place , to enjoy snow and winter sports.

The Rohtang !

Rohtang is 51 kilometers away from Manali and acts as a connecting link between Kullu district (under which Manali falls) and Lahaul and Spiti Valleys (famous for another popular tourist destination Laddakh).The travel time between Manali to Rohtang takes up to 3 hours on a high altitude hilly serpentine road .In the month of may and June when the pass opens first time for the public , it gets a large number of tourists so is best to set out for the journey as early as possible to avoid jams and delays.

Where Beas river originates

At the Rohtang summit you will come across Beas Kund glacier which is the origin point of river Beas.There is a small round dome shaped temple built near this place.Around this place all kinds of adventure activities take place.

Remember !
  • Noodles and Omlettes are the only thing to be offered by the food vendors at the Rohtang summit so you should be prepared to carry your own food from Manali.
  • It is a wise decision to get the snow dresses on rent from Manali itself as the dresses you find at Rohtang are normally dirty and expensive.
  • Before riding all-terrain vehicle or snow bikes at Rohtang be prepared to get the jerk and shocks they produce while moving on the hard snow.
  • There are no toilets in Rohtang , so , avoid having water or tea here.
